Contributor: Ableton UG Istanbul

Location: Hos Atolye, Rasimpasa/Kadikoy
Date : 2024, December 7th

In this workshop, participants will rediscover the Rasimpaşa Neighborhood through sound and interpret the information about urban life conveyed by the sounds they encounter in everyday life. The aim is to use sound as a creative material and a tool for urban analysis, to explore different ways of collecting and transmitting sound, and to develop an interdisciplinary perspective to find new ways of making connections with the city. At the end of the workshop, the participants will have created audiovisual postcards reflecting their experiences of the neighborhood and these postcards will be kept both as a means of individual expression and as a collective document of urban experience.

Recalling the most Powerful Memories of the 2000s
three-day online workshop

Location: Kadir Has University, Architecture Department
Date: 24,26-27 November 2020

The workshop starts with enhancing the aural sense of participants by presenting the basic properties of sound and practising them with listening exercises. The workshop uses memories and their sonic world as the main material to let participants rebond themselves via sound and be free to make changes in the memory. Then, focuses on the representation methods of sound by text and image. The aim of the workshop is to enhance aural sense, trigger memories, and make participants be able to think and create cross-disciplinary. Sound Sculpture Workshop
two-day workshop

Team: with Çağdaş Kaya, Ozan Özvatan
Location: Istanbul Technical University, Architecture Department
Date: 8-11 April 2019

After previous readings, debating on properties of the sound and its producing strategies, more detailed research on the topic of “sound sculptures” is made. Then, material-form-size effects on sound production are investigated. Also, user interaction and working principles (articulated by joints, impulse-response) are discussed. Students not only built their sound machines, but they also make graphical user manuals, such as; “how to build” and “how to play” diagrams.

Soundscape Architectural Design Studio
one-semester design studio

Team : with Burcin Güngen and Çağdaş Kaya,Ozan Özvatan
Location: ITU Taşkışla, Architecture Department
Date : Spring 2019

While focusing on the sound-producing/manipulating techniques in MIAM, the focus can be switched to the other side “space design” in Taşkışla. It gives possibilities of cross thinking. In fact, these processes/outputs (products) are not separated from each other. The main goal of the academic journey lies in the creation of a fusion design approach and method between these two dynamics. And the architectural design studio leads more discussion and overview between students and lecturers, mutually. Also, students are encouraged to design in a way that is enriched in terms of auditory sense, unlike common vision-based spaces. Also, the test drive of the “SPATIO” occurred with the studio’s students and Burçin Güngen. People were divided into groups of four people, then their eyes were closed during the session in Octaphonic Studio Room in MIAM. After the listening episode, they see the real space and compare it with the space in their mind.

Presentation/Test-drive of SPATIO with Architectural Students
lecture on my work

Location: Istanbul Technical University, MIAM
Date: 14 March 2019

During the architectural design studio conducted by Burçin Güngen5 at Istanbul Technical University (ITU) focused on “Soundscape”, students visited ITU MIAM to listen to and talk about my work, SPATIO. I first gave a speech on the creation process of the composition with the graphical score. I then divided the students into groups of four and asked them to close their eyes before the listening session, held in the Octophonic Studio at MIAM. After the listening session, they opened their eyes and saw the real listening space. We then had a discussion on their experiences of the spaces in their mind and made comparisons with the physical listening space.

Urban Sound Awareness and Representations Workshop #1
ten-day online workshop

Team : with Buşra Aştı, Melis Keskin
Location: Özyeğin University, Architecture Department
Date: 16-29 July 2019

The workshop aims to redefine the environment on sonic aspects. Students will learn to listen, analyze and make distinctions. Topics such as “sound mark” and “soundscape” will be discovered through “soundwalks” in Karakoy district. The auditory sense will be strengthened as a parameter of the design process.

*Soundscapes from the workshops lectured by Neval Tarım, Melis Keskin, and Buşra Aştı were created to accompany the booklet of the workshop series in the link below:
