INFRA-CONNECTOR
Ayşe Şentürer’s Architectural Design Studio Project VII
Uzuncayır Road Connections/Istanbul, Spring 2013

An infrastructure for the road connections / “yonca”s

The project is located on the Uzuncayır road connects (yonca) which is an intensive transfer point of the Asian side of Istanbul. The physical properties of the area, user profiles, changes in the usage and profile by hour/day/week, and the causes of these changes are examined. Advantages/disadvantages of the new topography created by the connection form of the roads are investigated. The proposed solution of the “yonca” at Uzuncayır can be a start point that can be spread to the other yonca's of Istanbul, Turkey etc.

User diagram, schematic section and structural layouts scheme with axonometric drawings.

The infrastructure can be located on one or more leaves of the “yonca”. There are components which can be both used separately or can be combined for different scenarios. The components are the pedestrian’s band, the storage units, and the catalysts. The pedestrian's band connects the leaves of the yonca’s by providing accessibility to the previous-dead public spaces and consists of electrical paths, stairs, elevators, and even bus stops. The tank units are for cars, furniture & second-hand things, and people. The catalysts are not there permanently. Apart from its catalyst use, it can be used as a storage unit during regular times.

Plan Layouts (from left to right): car tank unit, 2nd hand things tank unit, ground floor, waiting area tank unit, sleep tank unit.

BONFIRE “A Journey with/to Fire”
Open International Architectural Competition (Additional Selection by the Competition Organizers*)
Papa Westray/Orkney Island, February 2014

Trying to design an experience which is representing an old ritual (bonfire). experience based on a journey that has a certain route. Our presence of fire includes a journey to the origin of the human adventure. the journey comes true in the Orkney Islands which have impressıve historical and cultural backgrounds.

Demolishing straws through flaming becomes a metaphor for “deconstruction” and “entropy”. Also, the ritual leaves its trace after it happens. These footprints create a new layer to the island’s historical background.
